Our final tasting of the day was at Domaine Meyer-Fonné in the village of Katzenthal with breathtaking views of Château du Wineck. Our first tasting at Emile Beyer in the village of Equisheim set the stage for what the day would be like, magnificent! Following lunch and the great tasting at Dopff au Moulin, we went to the village of Ammerschwihr, to Domaine Freyburger where Nathalie and Christophe let us sample the fruits of their labor~ what a delicious, intimate tasting from two passionate independent winemakers. We had a scrumptious, cozy lunch in medieval Riquewihr, village of the Ribeauvillé, followed by a wonderful tasting at Dopff au Moulin, the largest of the four wineries we visited but with its own unique charm and varied portfolio of wines and champagnes. We visited 4 wineries, 3 of them boutique wineries (producing less than 8000 cases (one produced less than 3000 cases), and the wines were truly everything we expected to find in Alsace! What a fantastic day! From our initial correspondence with Colin to our first meeting, to experiencing the Alsatian wine country together, the entire day was nothing short of perfection! Colin is the quintessential professional, fun to be around, informative, and he has the ability to read your palate and know the wines you will enjoy all behaviors of a true, professional sommelier, wine educator, and travel host.
